Internship and Cooperative Education

The Internship and Cooperative Education are required courses in which students inthe Environmental and Occupation Health and Safety Sciencesconcentration experience the application of the skills and knowledge they have obtained from their coursework in apracticedbased work environment.

There are many opportunities for internships/coopsthroughlocal, state or federal environmental healthagencies, nonprofit organizations or private sector companies. Students are provided supervised application, observation and training in the various areas of environmental health which may include but not limited to:industrial hygiene, safety, occupational health, environmental health practices and techniques and public health.

Each student must participate in a minimum of 180 hours hands-on observation and training experiences provided by the supervisor/preceptor during the semester. Most but not all - internships are paid experiences and will typically involve 40 hours per week for 5 days for 11 weeks.

The department willsend internship/coop openingsto all students in the environmental health program via email throughout the year. Should you find an employer that is willing to sponsor you for an internship/coop, please contact the department to ensure that it will qualify for the program you are in.
